Victoria Spring Solar Panel Maintenance Tips

In this article, we are going to give you some hints for doing spring maintenance of your solar panels in Victoria, British Columbia, where it is already hot and sunny.

Before we get started, we would like to mention that if solar panels are on your roof, we do not recommend that all homeowners climb on ladders or roofs without some experience and knowledge of the safety requirements to do this, well, safely. You may want to hire someone to do this. That said, here are some maintenance chores that should be done at least twice per year.

Cleaning

Solar panels are their most efficient when they are clean. Panels covered with leaves and dirt will not be working at their best. Before cleaning, gently brush or wipe away leaves, sticks, and dirt. Always use a non-abrasive cloth or soft brush.

The main thing to know, here, is whatever you use to clean them should not leave a residue. There are products specifically made for cleaning solar panels, and there are cheaper, simpler alternatives available. As long as it is a mild detergent that does not leave a residue, it is fine to use.

Electrical

Have a look at any visible wiring. See if you notice anything that is disconnected or rusty or corroded. Make a note of it to let your solar energy supplier know about it.

Batteries

Check the batteries with the same eye as for the electrical. Is there anything loose, disconnected, rusty or corroded? Make a note of it.

Now is a good time to do these chores right before the hottest and sunniest times of the year in Victoria.
