Q3: Do solar panels still generate power on cloudy days?

A: Yes, solar panels produce electricity even when it's cloudy. Although their efficiency decreases, they capture both direct and diffuse sunlight. As long as there is daylight, solar panels will generate power, albeit at a reduced rate. The impact of cloudiness varies but doesn't stop energy production completely. Moreover, net metering with BC Hydro allows you to balance your energy production and consumption over the year, leveraging the excess energy produced on sunny days.

Q4: Will BC Hydro compensate me for the power my solar panels generate?

A: Through BC Hydro's Net Metering program, you receive credits for the excess electricity your solar system feeds back into the grid. This means you're only billed for the net electricity usage. Annually, if your solar production exceeds your consumption, BC Hydro compensates you for the surplus at their set rate, effectively turning your home into a small power generator.

Q5: What if BC Hydro stops paying for my solar power?

A: BC Hydro operates under regulations set by the BC Utilities Commission (BCUC), ensuring fairness in their dealings with solar producers. Any changes to policies affecting compensation would require a thorough review and approval by the BCUC, ensuring a fair and beneficial outcome for both parties.

Q6: Are solar panels high-maintenance and easily damaged?

A: Modern solar panels require minimal maintenance, mostly occasional cleaning, and are designed to withstand harsh conditions, including heavy snow, wind, and hail. With robust warranties covering power production and manufacturing defects, solar panels are a durable and reliable energy solution.

Q7: Will solar technology become outdated quickly?

A: Solar technology evolves gradually, ensuring that current systems remain relevant and effective for decades. The potential future benefits of slight technological improvements are generally outweighed by the immediate advantages of current solar installations, like reduced energy bills and environmental impact.

Q8: Can solar panels damage my roof?

A: Properly installed solar panels do not damage your roof; instead, they can protect and extend its life by shielding it from environmental elements. Professional installers use techniques that ensure safe attachment and even weight distribution.

Q9: Is the payback period for solar panels too long?

A: While the payback period is a consideration, it should be compared against the ongoing cost of traditional utility power. Solar panels offer finite payback periods, after which the energy produced is essentially free, leading to significant long-term savings.

Q10: Will my solar panels produce power at night or when covered in snow?

A: Solar panels do not generate power at night or when heavily covered in snow. However, in grid-tied systems, this is mitigated by the grid's ability to balance energy supply, using stored hydroelectric power when solar output is low. Seasonal variations are accounted for in the annual energy production, ensuring reliable year-round energy availability.

Q11: Is my area too cloudy for solar power to be effective?

A: Solar panels can be efficient even in areas with moderate sunlight. The effectiveness of solar energy depends on various factors, including local electricity costs, solar panel affordability, and available incentives, making it a viable option in many regions, including those with less sunshine.

Q12: Is my roof suitable for solar panels?

A: Advances in solar mounting technology have made it possible to install solar panels on a wide range of roof types. While some roofs may require specialized mounting solutions, most can accommodate solar installations, making it feasible for a variety of homes.

Q13: Should I install solar panels if I'm planning to move soon?

A: Installing solar panels can increase your home's value and appeal to buyers, much like other home renovations. Solar installations can reduce operating costs, enhance borrowing capacity for buyers, and provide a marketing edge in the real estate market, making it a wise investment even if you plan to move.

Q14: Are solar panels too heavy for my roof?

A: Most modern roofs are designed to support the weight of solar panels, along with other loads like snow. Solar panel systems are engineered to distribute weight evenly, and assessments can be made for older or unique roofs to ensure safe installation.

Q15: How can I understand solar technology better?

A: You don’t need to be a solar expert to benefit from solar energy. We provide comprehensive guidance and manage all technical aspects for you. However, if you’re interested, we can explain how solar panels convert sunlight into electricity, the role of inverters, and the overall operation of solar energy systems in simple terms.

Q16: What happens to solar panels at the end of their life? Are they recyclable?
