Does Solar Power Work on Cloudy Days?

The short answer is "yes."  Solar panels convert photons or light particles into energy. So, all of the energy we can see is useful. How well solar panels work on cloudy days will be based on the number of layers of cloud and how thick those layers are. Simply put, if it is still light out the solar panels will do fine, and if it is quite dark out they will perform less well.

While the clouds are common, they only filter the sunlight without blocking it entirely. Those photosensitive panels are still taking in everything they can and often more than you realize.

Solar panel technology is in constant development and solar power has become a major industry. With growth comes funding for Research & Development. The results are improved technologies that function more and more efficiently in overcast conditions.

With stormy countries like Germany in the forefront of solar energy production, it may be obvious that clouds alone aren’t enough to hold back the power of the sun.

Edge of cloud effect

Let’s not forget that clouds redirect energy. A good example of this is "edge of cloud effect". When the sun is shining behind a cloud the sun may not be visible, but the edge of the cloud is bright and that light is being refracted down to the panels. Rays that bounce back from the earth can be reflected back down from the clouds above. It's all based on how many light particles hit the panels.

Temperature Effects

Did you know that colder conditions actually increase solar panel efficiency? When the system isn’t subject to as much heat resistance, the flow of electrons is less impeded. In the colder months, snow cover on panels may interfere with solar energy production. Victoria can get cold, but endures less snow than other areas of BC, and when it does snow it rarely stays for long. Even then, snow does reflect light exceptionally well.

Climate and weather conditions affect the energy production from solar panels in many ways. During the abundant cloud-free days, we see a surplus of energy being sent to our local utility and credited for future use.
