What is BC Hydro's Net Metering program?

Across BC and right here In Victoria, solar roof designs help thousands of Canadians pay their energy bills.

Have you considered switching to solar power but still have some concerns? BC Hydro’s Net Metering program may be the answer.

There is no doubt that generating electricity, freely available from the sun, is an attractive and sustainable option. But the weather is variable. What if there are days where you’re not generating enough? What if you generate more than you can use? Is it wasted? BC Hydro’s Net Metering program addresses these concerns.

How does Net Metering work?

  • Sell excess electricity when you generate a lot
  • Buy electricity when you generate less

Simply put, when you generate more than you need, the excess is sold back to BC Hydro. This appears as a credit on your next bill. When, or if, there comes a time when you don’t generate enough of your own electricity, you buy it from them, just as you did before your solar installation.

Either way, you are always covered. Plus, you always stand to make money. Why? Because, if you generate so much power (or use so little) that you still have credits on your bills come March (or another chosen anniversary date), BC Hydro will pay you for the excess, at market rates.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Solar installation must be owned by you
  • Must be connected to BC Hydro

There are a few other eligibility criteria to meet before you can access the program. See the full list, and a helpful FAQ, here. Net metering is also open to other renewable energy sources such as wind and hydro, etc.

Currently, additional government incentives like the Canada Greener Homes Loan and the Canada Greener Homes Grant make the process of switching to renewable energy easier and more affordable than ever.

Of course, we at NetZero Solar are here to help! We professionally design, supply, and install solar systems to provide clean renewable energy for all kinds of residential and commercial applications throughout Victoria and Vancouver Island.
